[...] Backpack cable lock. Francoise Methot describes a quick and easy method for fashioning a homemade steel cable to secure your backpack while you travel (similar to more expensive solutions from companies such as Pacsafe http://www.pacsafe.com)! She writes: “Most of us have a padlock or two, so the only cost is the cable and the aluminum sleeves which shouldn’t cost more than $3–4”. Check out Francoise’s hack here. [...]

Ah, we just featured a post linking to some PacSafe tools that were similar to what you're recommending here. However, I prefer this—as it's DIY and less expensive. Great hack!

I can't stress how many times my little chain & lock have saved my crap. I have 2, one I actually bought from a travel store for $35, which is a little expensive for my tastes. The other I made using a similar technique, however yours seems to be a lot nicer looking. haha. Mine is a bit of a frankenstein cord. They may not be the strongest locks and chains around, but it's enough to slow people down from a quick 'Grab n Dash'. I definitely recommend everyone have some type of lock in their backpack. Love the post!

I use a cable lock that pulls out of a plastic case just because it is much lighter than the type shown. It has a lighter and more flexible cord, which can be an advantage. And a good point in the above comment about using combination locks. I've seen a couple of frantic searches for keys in the last couple of months, and at least one person had to pay to have her lock cut off.
